From the Civil War to the Battle of Abu Klea

One of the first-introduced machine guns, vertical magazine-fed, the Gardner allowed its buyers the choice of one or two barrels. Lessons learned on the Civil War's front-lines by Ohio-based weapons designer William Gardner informed this weapons' creation. After planning out the brilliant crank operation, Gardner approached Pratt and Whitney. The rest, as they say, is history.
